Alejandro Valverde took the overall lead of the Vuelta a España after winning the second stage in Jaen, Spain. Valverde, with the Caisse d’Epargne team, timed his final sprint to distance himself from the pack and finish the 103.9-mile ride from Granada to Jaen in 4 hours 23 minutes. He finished two seconds ahead of the Italians Davide Rebellin of Gerolsteiner and Alessandro Ballan of Lampre.
